Cleveland, Ohio
If you’ve followed my blogs for some time now, you know that I have traveled to many European countries. However, I enjoy finding new treasures in the beautiful USA. As I researched things to see in Cleveland, Ohio, I decided on three adventures.
The first adventure was the beautiful Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist located in downtown Cleveland.
The history of this cathedral begins in 1847. Upon arriving in Cleveland in 1847, Bishop Amadeus Rappe, began looking for an appropriate site to build the cathedral. The land where the cathedral stands today was purchased in 1845 by the pastor of St. Mary’s of the Flats. The pastor believed the land would be a good location for a cathedral. Bishop Rappe agreed and construction for the cathedral began in 1848.
The cathedral was completed in 1852 with a seating capacity of 900 people. Reconstruction began in 1946 and included the addition of the pipe organ and the 185-foot bell tower. However, the bells for the tower were not installed until 1988. The consecration of the renovated cathedral took place in September 1948.
After parking my car in the cathedral parking lot, I walked through a beautiful courtyard before coming to the front of the cathedral.
During the Jubilee of the Year 2000, and again for the Jubilee Year of Mercy in 2015/2016, the center set of doors to the cathedral were designated as the Holy Doors for the Diocese of Cleveland. The cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Cleveland.
The second adventure on my list was a fun movie set. This movie came out in 1983. It was one of my husband’s favorite movies. No matter how many times he saw this movie, he would laugh at the crazy scenes. I was making this trip the week of my husband’s 70th birthday. I knew I had to visit this set in his honor.
So, let’s see – can you guess the name of the movie if I say:
“You’ll shoot your eye out, kid!” OR
“I triple-dog-dare you!” OR
“Fra-gee-lay! It must be Italian! It’s a major award!”
Yes, you guessed it! The name of the movie is A Christmas Story starring Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, and Peter Billingsley as Ralphie.
If you are ever in Cleveland, I highly recommend a tour of the house where this fun movie was filmed.
There is also a museum…
And a gift shop…
We never met the Bumpus’ in the movie, but their dogs were the best!
If you’ve never seen the movie, I highly recommend it for good fun and lots of laughs. If you did see the movie, let me know your favorite part in the comments below.
This was my first time near Lake Erie. I knew I couldn’t leave Cleveland without visiting one of the beautiful Great Lakes. Here’s a short video of beautiful Lake Erie!
Cleveland was a great place to start this adventure. There is more to come. Stay tuned for my next blog as I share my visit with another author in a nearby town in Ohio.
