An Amazing Find in Milan, Italy!
When planning my trip to Milan, Italy in 2021, I viewed many YouTube videos to find different and fun things to do in the city. There were several videos that highly recommended a visit to one of the largest cemeteries in Milan. I thought it odd to go to a cemetery while on vacation. However, there were too many videos recommending this location. Reluctantly, I added the Cimitero Monumentale (the Monument Cemetery) to my list of things to visit in Milan. Granted, it was at the bottom of my list, but nevertheless, this cemetery was on the list.
Arriving at this location was breathtaking. It really didn’t look like a cemetery from the outside. However, I knew once I stepped onto the cemetery grounds why so many YouTubers recommended this location. The artistic statues and monuments were amazing. In many ways, I felt like I was walking through an outdoor museum.
Because of our faith, we have hope in and through Jesus Christ for everlasting life. The artist in this rendition brings hope and truth about eternity in a place that usually brings sadness. My trip to Milan was four years after my husband’s death. This statue made me think of him. I cried, and I smiled as I stood speechless before this beautiful work of art. I was so grateful to find this beautiful gem.
Several days ago, a good friend sent me an article from Fox News about a similar statue. This statue is in a cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.
This statue brought back a flood of memories of my youngest son, Danny, who also lived his life with cerebral palsy and died shortly before his 25th birthday. This statue, like the one in the Milan cemetery, speaks of truth and hope and love.
In November 2006, three months before Danny died, my first book was published. This book is about my son, Danny, and the struggles we faced in providing unexpected care to the child we loved so deeply. This journey with my son was the starting point in wrestling with God, asking the hard questions, and digging for answers. I pray that today the state and education bureaucracies are easier to maneuver for families of children with special needs. However, the life struggles, I am sure, are still the same.
